چکیده

Epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) point processes are a common model for the occurrence of earthquake events. ETAS models consist of a stationary background Poisson process modeling spontaneous earthquakes and a triggering kernel representing the space-time-magnitude distribution of aftershocks. Two popular non-parametric methods for estimation of the background intensity include histograms and kernel density estimators. While these methods are able to capture local spatial heterogeneity in the intensity of spontaneous events, they do not capture patterns resulting from fault-line structure over larger spatial scales. Here we propose a two-layer infinite Gaussian mixture model for clustering of earthquake events into fault-like groups over intermediate spatial scales. We introduce a Monte-Carlo expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for joint inference of the ETAS-IGMM model and then apply the model to the Southern California earthquake Catalog. We illustrate the advantages of the ETAS-IGMM model in terms of both goodness of fit of the intensity and recovery of fault line clusters in the Community Fault Model 3.0 from earthquake occurrence data.

Supplementary Material for Reactive Point Processes: a New Approach to Predicting Power Failures in Underground Electrical Systems

1. Related work. A general linear self-exciting process is identified by the conditional intensity function λ(t) = µ + k 0 t k <t g(t − t k) where µ is the baseline hazard rate. The Hawkes Process (Hawkes, 1971a,b) is a particularly tractable self-exciting point process with an exponential kernel, developed for earthquake modeling. Historically, a lot of effort has gone into modeling earthquake...

A robust wavelet based profile monitoring and change point detection using S-estimator and clustering

Some quality characteristics are well defined when treated as response variables and are related to some independent variables. This relationship is called a profile. Parametric models, such as linear models, may be used to model profiles. However, in practical applications due to the complexity of many processes it is not usually possible to model a process using parametric models. In these cas...

Standard errors of parameter estimates in the ETAS model_07

Point process models such as the Epidemic-type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model have been widely used in the analysis and description of seismic catalogs and in shortterm earthquake forecasting. The standard errors of parameter estimates in the ETAS model are significant and cannot be ignored. This paper uses simulations to explore the accuracy of conventional standard error estimates based on ...

Improvement of Iranian Seismic Design Code Considering the Near-Fault Effects

Characteristics of ground motions close to the earthquake source can be considerably different from those of far-field motions which should be considered in design process of structures. The current study aimed to present new design response spectra for Iranian seismic design code taking into account the near-fault effects. For this purpose, a new attenuation relation based on the ground motion...
